Just tested the download ( in the playground, but I think the demo is the same )

It is rather smart that You can create "directories" and "subdirectories" ( without being the web-master ) and allow users to download files from these.
It is also smart that You can have additional pop-up texts for folders and files.
And it is smart that there is a counter for the download.
All this together makes it better as, for example the Directory lister : http://www.directorylister.com.

But what I don't understand is - why is the search function so un-useable.
Is it me that don't understand how it functions ????

It seems that it can not search in subdirectories and it can not search in the information-text either.

What is the meaning with the search function, and how should it function.

We have no real search functionality within the download modul. The search field is a default functionality of the table and will only search within the current folder/table.
